Uplifting Indigenous Faculty Blanketing Ceremony celebrates trailblazing scholars
On September 29, 2026, guests were welcomed to s茮虛ex蓹new虛tx史 (h蓹n虛q虛蓹min虛蓹m虛) / Tl鈥檈7en岣得虛txw (S岣祑x瘫w煤7mesh), First Peoples' Gathering House at 麻豆视频 (SFU) for the Uplifting Indigenous Faculty Blanketing Ceremony. The ceremony was the first held at 麻豆视频and honoured 21 Indigenous faculty who have achieved their promotions to Assistant, Associate, Full Professor and Emeritus status, as well as honouring Canada Research Chairs and one Canada Excellence Research Chair.
鈥淗onouring and uplifting our Indigenous faculty is one way we can reciprocate their dedication and commitment, increase our visibility, and acknowledge how they are creating space and place for more Indigenous scholars to be welcomed into the academy,鈥 says Wenona Hall, Chair of the Department of Indigenous Studies. 鈥淎mong these honorees were several groundbreaking firsts. Between them, the honorees represented 23 different fields of study that 鈥 thanks to their leadership 鈥 now include Indigenous Peoples and our ways of knowing. The challenge in accomplishing this cannot be over-stated.鈥
Natahnee Winder, an Assistant Professor in Indigenous Studies, says the ceremony was an occasion to celebrate milestones, as well as encourage and inspire the next generation of Indigenous academics. 鈥淭here are so few individuals who land a tenure-track position in the academy. Everyone has a different journey or challenges that they have had to overcome,鈥 explains Winder. 鈥淭he ceremony lifts everyone together to stand side-by-side in the academy to acknowledge their journey as a collective for their many years of effort.鈥
The process of planning the ceremony was collaborative and several years in the making. "Natahnee Winder was instrumental in being persistent that this event manifest,鈥 says Dorothy Christian Cucw-la7, Associate Director, Indigenous Policy & Pedagogy. 鈥淚t is critical for the 麻豆视频community to see who the Indigenous scholars are and to hear about their accomplishments. They all do amazing work, and at this ceremony they were able to see each other, which is rare because everyone is so deeply involved in their own work."
Kaylena Ryan, Director of the Office for Indigenous Peoples, believes that acknowledgement and celebration are important aspects of building a community of care at SFU. 鈥淚 want to acknowledge and thank my predecessor, Ron Johnson, for supporting this from the start,鈥 Ryan says. 鈥淚ndigenous faculty are breaking barriers and making space for future generations, and that deserves to be celebrated. I hope this is something we continue to make space for at SFU, because Indigenous brilliance deserves to be celebrated consistently.鈥
