Eric Beauregard wins 2026 FASS Research Excellence Award in Social Sciences

October 21, 2026

The School of Criminology congratulates professor Eric Beauregard on receiving the 2026 Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) Research Excellence Award in Social Sciences.

For more than two decades, Beauregard has studied criminal behaviour, with a particular focus on sexual violence and homicide. He is internationally recognized for his expertise in this field and has authored more than 200 publications on sexual violence and policing. He has also provided training to law enforcement agencies across Canada and around the world.

Before becoming an academic, Beauregard worked as a criminologist for Correctional Service Canada, where he assessed more than 1,200 sex offenders. Listening to them describing their offenses firsthand helped shape his academic interest.

鈥淲hat struck me was how much of what they did involved choices 鈥攚here to go, who to approach, how to get the victim alone,鈥 Beauregard said. 鈥淭hat experience really shaped the questions I鈥檝e been asking ever since, and it鈥檚 also why I鈥檝e always tried to keep my research close to practice.鈥

Researching sexual violence and homicide can be emotionally taxing and methodologically complex, but for Beauregard, the potential to make a difference makes the work worthwhile. He hopes his findings will help make investigations more efficient.

鈥淔or me, the goal isn鈥檛 just to publish; it鈥檚 to put knowledge in the hands of the people who can use it, and ultimately to help protect potential victims.鈥

Reflecting on the award, Beauregard was quick to acknowledge the people who have worked with him throughout his career.

鈥淎 big thank you to my collaborators, some of whom I鈥檝e been working with for many, many years,鈥 Beauregard said. He also thanked his students, his co-authors in Canada and in Europe, and the police organizations that have worked with him. He also acknowledged colleagues in FASS and the School of Criminology, who he said helped create the conditions for his research.

鈥淚鈥檇 like to encourage students who are interested in difficult topics not to shy away from them,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hese are the areas where good research can make a real difference.鈥
