Areas of interest

Sergio A. Celis is a Colombian geologist specializing in sedimentology, ichnology, stratigraphy, and basin analysis. His research focuses on understanding the evolution of sedimentary systems across a wide range of depositional environments, from fluvial and deltaic settings to deep-marine basins. He integrates sedimentology, ichnology, sedimentary geochemistry, and subsurface datasets to investigate depositional processes, basin evolution, and reservoir heterogeneity, particularly in tectonically active margins.
Sergio completed his PhD in Earth Sciences at the University of Granada (Spain) in 2025, following a B.Sc. in Geology (Colombia) and two Master's degrees in Earth Sciences (Colombia) and Applied Geology to Mineral and Energy Resources (GEOREC; Spain). His work has taken him across a variety of geological settings in Europe and Latin America, and he has published in international peer-reviewed journals in the fields of sedimentology, stratigraphy, and palaeoenvironmental reconstruction.

Sergio's current research at Â鶹ÊÓƵ focuses on geological carbon storage in the sedimentary strata of east-central Vancouver Island and the adjacent Strait of Georgia. As part of the ARISE Group, he is developing regional 3D geological models to evaluate subsurface reservoir architecture, stratigraphic controls, and the long-term potential for COâ‚‚ storage in the Nanaimo Group and associated sedimentary successions.
