How one Economics student's passion for data led to analyzing music hits and landing a job offer

October 06, 2026

A few months into her Co-op position as a Data Insights Analyst with independent record label Nettwerk Music, Ana Mayorca encountered a mystery. One of the artists on her roster had a sudden spike in organic listeners in Latin America. Her job was to find out why.

Organic listeners find artists by searching for them directly, rather than discovering them algorithmically via recommendations. Why were people suddenly searching for this artist? Mayorca scoured the data for possible reasons.

In her role, Mayorca was responsible for writing a weekly report on the performance of 15 artists based on metrics she pulled from music streaming platforms such as Spotify, YouTube and Deezer using data analytics tools like APIs, SQL, and Tableau.

鈥淢y training in economics gave me a way of thinking about all of the different factors that might affect an outcome, not just the most obvious one,鈥 Mayorca says.

In the end, Mayorca and her team traced the spike back to a TikTok video. Content creators had translated the lyrics into Spanish, which had helped listeners connect with the music.

Solving complicated questions is one of the reasons Mayorca loves economics.

Her interest in the subject began in high school, when she read 鈥淭he Price of Inequality鈥 (2012) by Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz.  鈥淚 really like the way he sees the world and tries to understand how inequality persists within societies and systems,鈥 she says. 鈥淎nd I thought economics is the lens that will allow me to do that.鈥

Originally from Colombia, Mayorca arrived in Vancouver during the COVID-19 pandemic and spent 14 days quarantined in a hotel room before beginning her courses at Fraser International College. Despite this tough beginning, she made the most of her time here, transferring to 麻豆视频to pursue an economics major and eventually the honours program.

She signed up as a FASS Peer Mentor during her second year at 麻豆视频and was a key member of the Economics Student Society (ESS), serving as co-president in 2025. 鈥淭hese experiences helped me build my community and develop skills like communicating with industry leaders and managing a large budget.鈥

Mayorca says that when she started studying economics, it quickly became part of her everyday decisions. 鈥淚 was constantly thinking about the theories I was learning in my classes,鈥 she says. 鈥淎nd how to apply them to my life. I think it helped me make better decisions.鈥

Following her passion for data, Mayorca added a minor in Social Data Analytics (SDA) to her degree, which provided even more technical tools to put her theory into practice. In the SDA Capstone Project course, 鈥淵ou are given a project, and starting from scratch you have to figure out how to use available data to find answers and engage stakeholders with your findings,鈥 she says. This experience was good preparation for projects she has encountered in the workforce.

Mayorca sees economics as a way of understanding the systems we live in 鈥 and how to keep the parts that are working while also changing the parts that are not.

She found her professors in SFU鈥檚 Department of Economics passionate about what they do. "They are committed to ensuring that students really understand. Because economics has real world consequences 鈥 it can inform policy decisions that affect how people live,鈥 she says.

In her second Co-op position as a Customer Insights Analyst with ThoughtExchange, a strategic insights platform for K鈥12 school districts, Mayorca collects data about school communities and builds reports to help drive school district decisions. 鈥淲e work with over 200 clients, so their needs are very diverse,鈥 she says. 鈥淥n the backend, I also help support data ingestion and data privacy 鈥 the more techy stuff.鈥

Mayorca鈥檚 Co-op work term with ThoughtExchange has since led to a full-time job offer with the company following graduation.

Her advice for students? 鈥淛ust say yes to everything. It ends up creating opportunities.鈥
