Workshop Opportunity - Molecular Biology at UBC, Vancouver, BC
The next UBC Molecular Biology Workshop (see - Dec 7th to 11th, 2026. This is an intensive 5 day course that covers molecular biology techniques from both a theoretical and practical point of view suitable for the professional scientist/grad student/post-doc.
All revenues obtained in client fees go back into UBC's public science outreach programs. In other words, any funding from the delivery of the professional workshops go directly towards various science literacy projects, particularly those that interact with the K to Grade 12 school communities. This includes a variety of fieldtrip opportunities and/or teacher training workshops which we provide free of charge - for more information on this, please do visit the website at
In any event, if you're interested in taking the professional molecular biology workshop (at UBC, Vancouver, from Dec 7th to 11th, 2026), please check out the registration link at ).
THE MICHAEL SMITH LABS AND ADVANCED MOLECULAR BIOLOGY LAB PRESENTS OUR MOLECULAR BIOLOGY WORKSHOP 2026 WINTER Session.*
ONE WEEK VERSION (5 DAYS) - MOLECULAR TECHNIQUES WORKSHOPS
December 7th to 11th, 2026 (CAN$1575 鈥 includes GST)
DESCRIPTION:
This intense 5 day workshop will focus on a myriad of different techniques used in the molecular manipulation of DNA, RNA and protein. This includes practical next gen sequencing experiments. This workshop is primarily aimed at researchers who require a quick but content heavy updating, those who are new to the area, as well as professionals who are familiar with the literature but would like some practical hands on experience (bioinformaticians, engineers).
PHILOSOPHY: Whilst molecular techniques have evolved at a blindingly fast rate over the last few decades, the underlying biochemical principles behind the vast majority of them have actually changed little. This workshop therefore combines opportunities to perform the latest, as well as commonly used older techniques, with particular attention to the chemical nuts and bolts behind them. In all, this allows the researcher to not only gain needed practical hands-on familiarity with the techniques, but also achieve a comfortable theoretical level to allow for both (1) that all important skill of troubleshooting, and (2) the often undervalued skill of judging the utility of 鈥渢ricks鈥 that aim to speed up, or lower costs of a given methodology.
Hands on techniques covered include: Various nucleic acid purification methodologies (silica bead, organic, and/or pI based), restriction digests, ligations, dephosphorylation assays, agarose gel electrophoresis, transformation (including electroporation), PCR, reverse transcriptase assay, real time qPCR, SDS-PAGE, Western blot analysis, Isoelectric focusing, 2D protein gels, and next gen sequencing (soil 16s microbiome). Supporting video and in-person lectures will be provided on all topics.
