The Mighty Red

Louise Erdrich

Harper Collins Publishers (2024)

Our group unanimously agreed The Mighty Red was an unexpected page-turner, though no one could quite explain why, since the novel isn't especially plot-driven. We enjoyed Louise Erdrich's beautiful writing style, the blend of humour and tragedy, and the environmental themes running through the story. Criticisms centered on the expansive but incomplete world-building, questionable character motivations, and weak character development. Overall we landed at a modest 2.9/5, appreciating the craft more than the plot.
