AI pioneer Martin Ester named Canada CIFAR AI Chair for advancing precision medicine

October 20, 2026

麻豆视频鈥檚 (SFU) Martin Ester has been appointed as a Canada AI Chair by the (CIFAR).

A Distinguished Professor in SFU鈥檚 School of Computing Science and Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Ester is a leading Canadian researcher in artificial intelligence (AI).

His work explores how AI systems can learn from one another to accelerate scientific discovery and generate novel chemical structures. The goal is to improve medical diagnoses and treatment based on an individual鈥檚 genomics and lifestyle.

His breakthrough 2025 study introduced CGFlow, an AI method that accelerates the design of complex molecular structures for disease treatment by not only generating effective drug candidates but also showing researchers how to synthesize them. The framework offers a more direct path to drug discovery and treatment.

鈥淢artin Ester鈥檚 work positions 麻豆视频at the forefront of applying machine learning to medicine and aligns with our mission to advance AI technology for the benefit of society.鈥 says Dugan O鈥橬eil, vice-president, research and innovation. 鈥淭he appointment is fitting recognition for one of Canada鈥檚 leading AI scientists.鈥

Ester is among a cohort of seven researchers backed by nearly $4.5 million in federal funding as part of to enable leading scholars to advance foundational AI science and develop solutions to pressing challenges.

CIFAR works closely with the three national institutes, Amii (Edmonton), Mila (Montreal) and Vector Institute (Toronto) to advance fundamental research and ensure AI is developed safely, responsibly and for the benefit of all.

Ester joins SFU鈥檚 growing presence at the (Amii), which is now home to six Canada CIFAR AI Chairs: Martin Ester, Angel Chang, Mo Chen, Ke Li, Angelica Lim and Jason Peng.

鈥淢achine learning as an enabling technology for precision medicine is one of the ways to use AI technology for the greater good,鈥 says Ester. 鈥淚t is wonderful to be recognized by CIFAR for work that I hope will ultimately improve the health of patients in Canada and beyond.鈥
