Supporting members of SFU's Iranian community

September 28, 2022

My heart is with Iranian members of our Â鶹ÊÓƵcommunity as we continue to witness the impact of Mahsa Amini’s death while in the custody of authorities in Iran.

On behalf of SFU, I want you to know that we stand in solidarity with all of you in our communities who are impacted by the ongoing situation and share concerns for all Iranians—and especially Iranian women—who are courageously standing up for human rights at their personal costs.

If you have been affected by the situation in Iran, there is help available within our community. Please reach out.

For students:

  • Connect with a chaplain: The Â鶹ÊÓƵMultifaith Centre has chaplains from various faith backgrounds available for one-on-one conversations and support.
  • My SSP: Â鶹ÊÓƵstudents can access free 24/7 mental health support through the My SSP app. Culturally relevant support options are available.
  • See a Counsellor: Free, confidential, time-limited supports are available to all registered Â鶹ÊÓƵstudents. Identity-based support options can be found here.
  • All available students supports at Â鶹ÊÓƵcan be found .

For faculty and staff:

  • Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP): the Â鶹ÊÓƵEmployee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) provides confidential, professional assistance to help Â鶹ÊÓƵemployees and their family members resolve problems that affect your personal and work lives.
  • Critical Incident Support: A Critical Incident (or Significant Event) is a traumatic event that creates a strong emotional reaction. This reaction may interfere with an individual’s ability to manage normal day-to-day activities or have a large negative impact on the people involved or community members that have in some way been involved.
