Could medicine be a good fit?

There is no single type of person who becomes a physician. People come to medicine with different interests, strengths, backgrounds and life experiences. These aren't admission requirements or a checklist. You don't need to see yourself in every description. Many of these skills can develop over time.

People and relationships

You enjoy getting to know people, listening to their experiences and building relationships.

Curiosity and problem-solving

You like asking questions, making connections and working through problems that may not have one clear answer.

Different perspectives

You are open to learning from people whose experiences and circumstances may be different from your own.

Teamwork

You enjoy collaborating, communicating clearly and contributing to a team.

Adaptability

You can stay engaged when situations are unfamiliar or challenging and know when to ask for help.

Attention to detail

You understand that careful, thoughtful work matters when others are relying on you.

Purpose and service

You are motivated by work that can improve people's health and well-being.

Complexity and uncertainty

You recognize that real-world problems do not always have simple answers and are willing to consider different possibilities.

Learning and growth

You enjoy learning about the world around you, exploring new ideas, deepening your understanding and continuing to grow through feedback and reflection.

A career with many possibilities

Alongside caring for patients, physicians may:

  • Teach and mentor medical learners, residents, and other health professionals.

  • Conduct research and contribute to new knowledge and better models of care.

  • Lead and improve health systems through quality improvement, administration, or health-care leadership.

  • Use technology and innovation to improve access, coordination, and quality of care.

  • Advocate for communities and contribute to more equitable health systems.

  • Develop focused areas of practice based on their interests, training, and community needs.
