Care happens everywhere across our communities: in clinics and hospitals, but also in homes, cultural spaces, mutual aid networks, and through the often-unrecognized labour of caregivers, community workers, doulas, advocates, and grassroots leaders.

Many of these people and organizations are filling critical gaps in our health and social systems. Yet they are often doing so with limited resources, short-term funding, fragmented services, and little influence over the decisions that shape how care is funded and delivered.

This program will bring together a cohort of people working across health, community care, policy, advocacy, and grassroots initiatives to explore a central question: What would it take to build and sustain communities of care that are equitable for both the people receiving care and the people providing it?

Participants will apply RADIUS鈥檚 Equity-Centered Community Design framework to explore, unpack, and reimagine these communities of care.

Overview

Through shared learning, systems thinking, peer exchange, and collaborative problem-solving, participants will explore this question across three interconnected levels:

  • The people doing the work
  • The organizations sustaining it
  • The larger systems shaping what care can look like

People

We hope to explore how we support the well-being, capacity, and experiences of caregivers, health practitioners, community workers, medical professionals, peer workers, doulas, settlement workers, and others providing formal and informal care.

Organizations

Many of the organizations closest to communities are also operating with the fewest resources.
How do we help community-based organizations sustain the care they provide?

Systems

What policies, funding models, partnerships, and service structures need to change so care is more equitable and sustainable?

Program journey

Using RADIUS鈥檚 Equity-Centered Community Design framework, participants will explore questions of power, participation, and whose knowledge is valued within the system. This will happen in the following stages:

  • Framing the challenge
  • Mapping the system
  • Understanding the system
  • Designing and testing a response

Some examples of change can be:

  • Funding model
  • Policy change
  • Partnerships
  • Building reciprocal communities of care - informal and formal
  • Referral pathways
  • Workforce models
  • Community governance
  • Compensation for lived and community expertise
  • Shared infrastructure or resources

Cost

We want to make this program accessible for participants, open to as many people as possible. Applicants can select the program cost that is applicable to them:

  • Full Bursary (100% of costs covered): $0
  • Half Bursary (Most costs are covered): Pay what you can up to $500
  • Institutional Support: If you have support from your organization, employer, agency, or group, there is a sliding scale fee of $500-$1500.

I grew up in the sands of Brunette Creek in New Westminster, where I learned to skip stones, catch fish, and tread lightly on unceded land of the Katzie, Kwantlen, Qayqayt, sc虛蓹wa胃ena蓙涩 t蓹m蓹x史, s蓹l虛ilw蓹ta蓙涩 t蓹m蓹x史, S鈥櫭砽h T茅m茅xw, Stz鈥檜minus, and x史m蓹胃k史蓹y虛蓹m. The creek bed and city have been a connecting place for thousands of years, and I work to feel a part of those connections.

Those connections have been best felt when organizing in community around sense of place, isolation, language preservation, heritage reform, and Indigenous sovereignty. These connections have also woven themselves into roles and opportunities: as Curator and Co-Founder of Kudoz, Director of Organize BC, and Director of Populous Map.

I learned to use my Masters of Anthropology to document these connections, but I honour and evaluate them by sinking back into the creek鈥檚 soft sand. Reciprocity in community and home are what I innovate for.
